Dr. Julie Davelman received her Bachelors of Art in Psychology from New York University, and her Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Clinical Psychology from St. John’s University. She began her professional career as a counselor for students with financial and academic difficulties at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York. In this capacity, Dr. Davelman had the opportunity to meet students from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances. This was the perfect environment to fine tune her goal-directed approach to treatment since everyone had a well-defined, common goal– graduation day!
After five years of guiding students towards academic success, Dr. Davelman transitioned into an intense clinical role at a private practice that contracts with the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCPP; formerly DYFS) to provide psychological evaluations and therapy for its clients. Having completed more than seven hundred evaluations in a wide range of cases with both children and adults, Dr. Davelman developed expertise in identifying the needs of families. Moreover, this role provided her with very solid experience in both the evaluation and treatment of severe substance abuse and mental health issues. She also became adept at leveraging community resources that can be leveraged to help families adjust to even the direst of circumstances.
At Abrams Psychological Services, Dr. Davelman uses her diverse clinical background to provide individual and group therapy for people experiencing a wide gamut of clinical symptoms, including depression, anxiety, anger and trauma. Additionally, through her involvement with Births, Babies and Beyond, Dr. Davelman is actively involved in the promotion of maternal and paternal mental health and other aspects related to the starting of a family and the raising of children. Dr. Davelman would like to help families develop the skills they need to be healthy, loving and supportive.
Dr. Davelman also has an interest in helping people meet their health and wellness goals, whether that means exercising more, losing weight quitting smoking or sleeping better. By looking at the mental health components of wellness, Dr. Davelman helps clients achieve the goals they set for themselves. She also provides support during setbacks and struggles helping client persist on the road to wellness.
Dr. Davelman is licensed as a psychologist in New Jersey (# 5223) and New York (# 18015) and is fluent in Russian.
